Children And Reading

My parents inspired my love for books and stories in my early childhood and looking back I can see how important that was for me growing up. I think this quote of Neil Gaiman is so relevenat when it comes to reading: “Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.”

To celebrate reading I wrote a small poem about a little girl called Harriet.

Harriet always has her nose in a book
and this tends to concern other people
‘You’ll slip and you’ll fall
and you’ll have your back crooked,‘
but her hunger for stories just deepens.

Harriet always has her nose in a book
and she reads for hours and hours,
of fairies and dragons and old wizard crooks
and often she wonders how fun it would be,
if she had magical powers.

Harriet always has her nose in a book
and every day she chooses to venture
to a dark deep blue sea
or a strange galaxy,
she’s always prepared for adventure.
